2012-2013

Plasmonics with "nano-hockey sticks"
David Rossouw and Gianluigi Botton observe the lowest excitation modes at the highest spatial resolution ever reported in plasmonic nanomaterials using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The MSE team used the high resolution electron microscopes at the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (http://ccem.mcmaster.ca ) to measure the spatial distribution of excitation modes in plasmonic waveguides and observe new phenomena of light propagation in Ag nanostructures around sharp bends and kinks. This publication (http://prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v110/i6/e066801) appeared in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters this week. Very appropriately for Canada, some of the nanostructures used to demonstrate these effects have the shape of ice hockey sticks!
Y. Su and I. Zhitomirsky published their paper on “Electrophoretic assembly of organic molecule and composites for electrochemical supercapacitors” in the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science 392 (2013) 247-255.
Xiang Wang, Hatem S. Zurob, Guang Xu, Qibin Ye, Olivier Bouaziz & David Embury published their paper “Influence of Microstructural Length Scale on the Strength and Annealing Behavior of Pearlite, Bainite, and Martensite” in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 44, (2013), 1454-1461.
Dr. Purdy has been named one of the 125 people of impact at McMaster University!
To celebrate McMaster’s 125th anniversary, the McMaster Alumni Association asked you, our alumni and friends: which McMaster figure – professor, benefactor, administrator, staff member, or graduate – has made the greatest impact. To see all the details and the full list click here.
Congratulations Dr. Purdy!
Professor. I. Zhitomirsky and his students Y. Sun and Y. Wang published, “Dispersing agents for electrophoretic deposition of TiO2 and TiO2–carbon nanotube composites” in Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochem. Eng. Aspects 418 (2013) 131– 138.

Using Mac's massive microscope, scientists open door to new technologies
Guo-zhen Zhu and Gianluigi Botton with the Titan 80-300 Cubed. Housed within the Canadian Centre for Microscopy on the McMaster campus, the powerful microscope helped researchers develop a new way to study the structures of complex surfaces, opening the door to future discoveries in materials, energy and technology.
Ph.D. student Guo-zhen Zhu and Prof. G. Botton published a paper on the study of atomic and electronic structure of surfaces using TEM and EELS in the prestigious journal Nature, ranked #1 of all interdisciplinary scientific journals, with an impact factor of 36. Find the McMaster press release here.  The paper can be found on the Nature website.
