Degrees and Admissions

The Department offers accredited post-graduate degree programs at both the Master’s and Doctorate levels.

    • M.A.Sc Program in Materials Engineering
    • Ph.D.  Program in Materials Engineering

NOTE: The options for M.Sc or Ph.D in Materials Science are available upon request. Please contact the department for details. There is no difference in the programs, only in the title of the degree awarded. Once offer of admission is accepted, this program status cannot be changed.

MASc = Master of Engineering

MSc = Master of Science

In addition, there are many opportunities for research activity as Post Doctoral Fellow or Research Associate. Individual faculty members should be contacted for these positions, since vacancies occur quite irregularly.

Graduate Admissions

For admission to the M.A.Sc. degree program, a strong baccalaureate degree is required with at least a B+ standing (equivalent to McMaster GPA = 8.5) in engineering, mathematics or the physical sciences.

For admission to the Ph.D. degree program:  successful completion of a Master’s degree with at least a B+ average

The Department of Material Science and Engineering offers the following annual financial funding for it’s students ( as a combination of scholarship and Teaching Assistant employment)

All “complete” international applications will be assessed by the admissions committee after the application closing date.

If all minimum requirements are met for admission to the MSE program, your application will be made available to all faculty currently accepting students. You will be contact by any interested faculty directly and any offers of admission will come from the School of Graduate Studies.

Offers of admission will be made the month following the application portal closing.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language. Such applicants are required to supply this evidence as part of their application. Applicants may be exempted from this requirement if they have completed a university degree at which English is the language of instruction (Please attach proof – letter from institution)

The most common evidence is a score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Equivalent scores on other recognized tests may also be considered.

Minimum accepted TOEFL scores (as outlined in the Graduate Calendar for the Faculty of Engineering):

iBT: (Internet Based Test):  80
Paper Based Test:  550
Computer Based Test:   213
The IELTS is also accepted, with a minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each category.

Please note that TOEFL scores expire after two years. Only current tests will be considered.

The McMaster University Institution Code is 0936.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering’s Code is 69.

Students who have completed an Academic ESL program through Canadian academic institutions may petition to have this considered in lieu of TOEFL. Please attach all documents/proof to online application

Payment

The application fee is $100 in Canadian funds (or the EQUIVALENT in US funds) for application fees paid online by Visa or MasterCard.

If you decide to pay by cheque OR a World Money Order instead, there is a $15 administration fee making the application fee $115 in Canadian funds (or the EQUIVALENT in US funds). Please make cheque or world money order payable to “McMaster University.” There is a $30 processing fee for cheques with non-sufficient funds. Please make sure that you have filled in your personal cheque correctly!

Application fees will not be waived.

Notes

Eligible applications will be available for potential supervisors to review for academic year in which applied.

If you have not received an offer of admission within 6 months of applying you are welcome to reapply for the next available session. If an unsuccessful applicant wishes to reapply, a new application package, including supporting documentation and application fee must be submitted.

We do not provide status update on eligible applicants. All application will be updated on Mosaic after the system has closed and all applications are reviewed.

Applications are only valid for the academic year in which applied (Applications will not be carried over to the next academic year)
